Favorite bits about 26.2 through NYC

- Befriending the most delightful Englishman on the ferry (he indulged me in banksy talk)
- Waiting for coffee in the starting village with the loudspeaker blaring announcements in every possible language
- An amazing singalong to Frank Sinatra's 'New York, New York' as we stood on the entrance to the Verrazzano
- A tall kindly blonde man smiled, laughed and gave me a hug, when I croaked "Oh. My. God" at the starting line
- Helicopters hovering at the center of the Verrazzano Bridge
- Gossiping with other runners about Pamela Anderson's whereabouts down 4th Ave
- Little kid high fives on Flatbush Ave
- Fort Greene brigade singing and dancing to YMCA
- Church Choirs and Brass Bands and Drum circles and Bagpipes
- Wall of cheering and amazingness on Bedford in Williamsburg
- Quiet calm of the Queensboro Bridge
- That wall of sound that hits you upon entering Manhattan
- The boy in a fancy suit who handed me a life saving banana in the Bronx
- Awesome strangers yelling "Yeah Borky!" in Harlem
- The guy who chanted "Every step counts" outside Central Park
- Uncontrollable happy tears from miles 25-26.2
- Name in the New York Times (!!!!)

I love you, New York. Thank you. That was amazing.

not okay not okay not okay not okay not okay

The perils of falling asleep to spotify.

A few weeks ago I came home from the bar and wanted to listen to one, ONE, Selena Gomez song. Unfortunately, I fell asleep and spotify played the entire Selena Gomez collection. Top spotify artists for Lola? Selena Gomez now may or may not be in the top five.

gentle reminder

this song about boners was #1 in 1998. and everyone was okay with that.

I spent a significant portion of 1999 listening to Deejay Punk Roc's album, ChickenEye. And when I say "listen," I mean I had mini raves in my bedroom dancing like a maniac. I love this album. And it is a major contributing factor to my ridiculous dance moves.

need to find this on vinyl

4, 5, 6

Spent a lot of time watching Yo MTV Raps and MTV Jams in the morning while I got ready for middle school and high school. This resulted in a deep love for 90s hip hop.

One of my favorites: Sole, who is pretty much pre-Trina. Sharing below.

I want the top 10 dividend payers to smash competition to pieces.

I want to rent a private villa in the Turks and Caicos.

In college, my friend and I called 4fact and sang the guitar riff to discover the source of the sample.

4fact didn't know, but after much deliberation we landed on "Enter Sandman"

Theme Songs

In general, I think it's fairly important to have a theme song. (If not multiple theme songs.) This was mine in college. I think it remains as part of the repertoire.

You collect and craft your syllables so artfully.
Gilded, euphonious, vowels.
Yellow plated half-truths.

Words are empty mason jars
Hollow, vacant, unoccupied
Stacked side by side like the royal guard.

They're just sounds.
Without actions, gestures, implications.
Fragmented non-facts.

A point well-made is worthless
without authenticity.

it's all a matter of locating
identifying, naming and processing
before it spirals.
before it grows like ivy
covering he walls of my brain
hiding and skewing the synapses
between logic and emotion.

the feeling sits ontop of my chest
like a clogged artery
or a giant gulp of peanut butter.
rocks stretch across my lungs
oxygen trapped by granite.

we all start anew.
buds start from scratch.
the world breaks apart to make room for the good.

In 2000, I saw Dj Brisk in Pittsburgh at a random club near campus. Unclear how I made it through an entire night of happy hardcore, but it was kind of amazing. PLUR?

Please don't ask me to defend it, but I heart Lil Wayne. Especially the new track. The basslines are ridiculous. Lyrically? Teeming with misogyny. Should be offended, but somehow amused. Regardless, I must listen to bunch of Trina to counteract all this.

...and i can't stop laughing. you guys are amazing.

Sunday, February 24, 2013

what have you been up to lately?

- Clearly not blogging. sorry about that, guys.

- Just finished Going Clear. Goodness gracious the culture around Scientology is fascinatingly bonkers. Highly recommend this read. Drawback: the book jumped around a lot. I prefer a chronological approach when it comes to 'nonfiction', so the jumping around was not my favorite.

- Currently re-reading Hamlet. It's been 14 years since I've last read it, and I still love it. Heck yeah, Horatio.

- Officially all caught up on True Blood.

- Obsessed with smoothies. Delicious, delicious smoothies.

- Marathon training begins again soon and I am a little too excited about it. I should probably just train year round because I dig it so much.

- Need to go dancing. Soon. More electro in my life, please.

Diary #19

Lola. Age 12.

December 21, 1994

Dear Book,

I GOT MY ARIEL! My no-handed cartwheel! I'm so excited, I could scream. I will hug everybody I'm so happy.

I actually remember this and it was awesome! As a wee Lola, I took gymnastics classes from toddler time to high school. While not particularly graceful, I was fearless when it came to tumbling. How many back handsprings do you want me to do? 4? Done. It took me a while to get my no handed cartwheel, but it was badass when I finally hit it. Also, I'm fairly certain I would break myself if I tried to do it again now.

things i'm currently obsessed with

- kale

- new necklace from loyalty and blood

- query building
