songs that remind me of stuff: day 7

Day 07 - A song that reminds you of a certain event(s)

miley cyrus - party in the usa

this song reminds me of weddingfest spring 2010. (arson and i had three weddings the month of april, all in different cities for three consecutive weekends.) we drove to northern nj, virginia beach and cape cod for wedding awesomeness. i was the driver and he was the navigator. every time i got tired, it was time for miley cyrus. he may have wanted to hurt me, but i caught him singing a few times.

songs that remind me of stuff - day 6

Day 06 - A song that reminds of you of somewhere

shakira - hips don't lie

this song was ridiculously popular when i was studying abroad in italy. hearing it reminds me of all the good times we had wandering rome and drinking obscene amounts of delicious, delicious wine. i miss hanging out on the terrazzo at night. every once in a while i daydream about becoming an expat and moving to a laid back Mediterranean country. if only i had the $$!

songs that remind me of stuff: day 5

Day 05 - A song that reminds you of someone

destiny's child - jumpin jumpin

this track came on pandora on my walk to work yesterday. i burst out laughing and immediately thought of my girls from college. (so i guess i'm cheating a little. this reminds me of 4 people.) anyway, this was the ANTHEM for basement parties circa 2000. hearing it gives me flashes of dancing at 355 meyran with my besties. some of my favorite memories ever.

on a destiny's child related note, bootylicious was amazing. what a great sampling job. i secretly want my wedding party to come out to this song. (or bubba sparxxx- ms. new booty) it would be epic to see my friends do a booty drop in formalwear.

backup dancers

holy shit. these dudes might be the best backup dancers i've ever seen. first 20 seconds are the best. must remember to keep my headphones when i watch this on repeat.

songs that remind me of stuff: day four

Day 04 - A song that makes you sad

this was an easy pick. it is one of the most depressing breakup/being single songs i've ever heard. perhaps i went too easy by picking morrissey, but no one has mastered the sad, obsessive self-loathing like morrissey. it's quite brilliant.

the smiths - i know it's over

songs that remind me of stuff: day three

Day 03 - A song that makes you happy

Yes! early 90s dance pop makes me extraordinarily happy. there's something about 90s electronic music that delights me. so once again, i'm listing two songs. i think deelite might be my main pick, but i can't leave crystal waters out. these tracks guarantee my presence on the dancefloor.

crystal waters - 100% pure love

deelite - groove is in the heart

songs that remind me of stuff: day two

Day 02 - Your least favorite song

there's so many to choose from. it's a tie between two though. it's important that i include both, because i hate them both but in different ways.

phil collins - easy lover

i hate this song because i've heard it way too many times. any given phil collins song hurts my soul, but this one is particularly shitty.

katrina & the waves - walking on sunshine
every time i hear it, this song gives me a throbbing headache. don't know why. something about the chorus induces a migraine. blaaah.

holy crap m.i.a.

m.i.a. takes over pitchfork's twitter, releases new video, album tracklist

after watching the video, i am really looking forward to hearing the rest of this album. m.i.a. takes art to a whole other level.

the video is NSFW. seriously. not at all.

so, what's up with you?

random things in a list, just the way i like it:

- i had to reach deep down to find motivation to come to work today. my main motivation is that i have only 3 vacation days left. need to earn more of those.

- last night stuart and i went to dinner at my favorite restaurant farmacia. deliciousness ensued.

- at dinner, i learned of the awesomeness behind the "john daly." thank you stuart. john dalys are my new summer jam.

- as of late, i've switched my club/bar drink of choice from gin & tonic to raspberry stoli & sprite. this is one of the girliest things i could drink, right up there with cosmos or sex on the beach. i think i'm ok with this. just as long as arson is ok with ordering them for me.

- had a great run yesterday where i managed to avoid the inclement weather. thanks for that, rain.

- on friday, i put in a request with the dj at top hat to play egyptian lover, and he hooked it up. 1980s beats = <3

- still thinking about phd programs. perhaps a mix between public policy and sociology. it could be very cool.

i think i found my theme song

the bhangra workout

arson selected my latest exercise adventure, the bhangra workout. it was fun! my arms hurt afterward, but it's not exactly the most aerobically effective workout. typically i don't do well with choreographed dances, but it was fun to bop around, learn some new moves and yell in punjabi. two thumbs up.

current internet favs

- creepily accurate horoscopes: soulgarden

- sleep talkin man

- a study of cultural geography in philly the necessity for ruins

- photography for the soul: diary 29

theme song

i got some very good advice this week: pick a theme song.

my criteria for a good theme song:
- funky beats
- easy to sing or hum along
- lyrics do not necessarily have to be upbeat or empowering
- it must be an awesome song

some ideas:

the rapture - whoo! alright yeah... uh huh

deelite - groove is in the heart

cookie monster - c is for cookie

basement jaxx - romeo

lyrics born - lady dont tek no

what are you listening to?

roxy cottontail - double dare (proper villains and jubilee remix)
it's hard to sit still when i heard this. it makes me want to rave.

caribou - odessa
ridiculously funky. stuart, if you haven't heard this one, i gently suggest that you to listen to it. it seems like something you would heart and put on a mix.

rainer weichhold - infernal
excellent running song. it has a slow build, but it settles nicely into a 70s vibe.

vamprie weekend - taxi cab
i heart the new album. this song and diplomat's son are my favorites so far. i really appreciate the production and sound quality of this album. who does the sound mixing? each instrument is highlighted and blended perfectly. it's really lovely.

zero 7 - pop art blue
it's better if you sing along loudly to this song.

scissor sisters - tits on the radio
i know it's an older track, but i really dig it! it's great for the morning commute. it's probably good if you sing along to this track as well.

CHROMEO

new segment: exercise

lately, i've been taking advantage of comcast on demand. particularly, exercise tv. so far my favorites are pilates and cardio kickboxing. but there are so many exercise options out there. i have a blog and i like to exercise. so let's try these out and then review them. yes? yes.

tonight, i tried "cardioke" with billy blanks jr. the concept is to sing while you do relatively easy cardio dance-y moves. i thought i would hate this but it was really fun. it was goofy and they don't stress the moves at all. basically i got to bop around singing for 20 minutes. i can dig that. also, the cool down song is AMAZING. some lady sings it to you while you stretch. you have to hear it to believe it.

it's possible that i like this in more of an ironic sense than a legit sense. regardless, i had fun and i give this 4 out of 5 stars for creativity. however, i will give it 1.5 stars for calorie burning.

cure for monday grouchiness

for maximum effect, sing along at the top of your lungs.

dear cardigans,

please release new music and do a US tour. it would make me ridiculously happy. i know you haven't released a new album in about 5 years, so this is a perfect time.

intense abstract/philosophical question of the day

after a long day at work, what do you do to make sure that you're still alive and kicking? how do you live outside the box?

i'm starting to think that the only way for me to do this is through creative outlets like writing, drawing, sculpture, photography, etc. (exercise tends to help with this too.)

currently, emails + paperwork + television = i feel like i'm in a coma. i'm not sure if it's possible to live outside the box every single day, but i'd like to try.
