creep is an incredibly produced song, and it has some dark-ass lyrics - see the afghan whigs' cover of it if you don't believe me. artists i respect have called 'creep' the best song of the 90s in terms of production value. in contrast, waterfalls is probably the better song, but its lyrics essentially suggest that the listener not follow her dreams; that she ought to "stick to the rivers and the lakes that [she is] used to." i give the edge to waterfalls because of the killer chorus.
i vote creep as the better song. i think waterfalls is too preachy. TLC tells us what to do, and it's kinda bad advice. I'd rather listen to Robert Frost.
p.s. thank you for reminding me about the afghan whigs cover as i completely forgot about it.
Tough call, but I'll go with Creep. While I like Waterfalls, it's a little sugary. Creep is downright sexy - that hornline...damn!
A year or so ago I bought the TLC hits collection. I was surprised a) by how many hits they actually had and b) at how much a lot of their music is Prince-ly. I know, I know, but I'm serious. And they did cover 2 Prince penned tracks (Get it Up and If I was Your Girlfriend).
There were persistent rumors that he wrote Waterfalls, but it's untrue.
I didn't realize there was a TLC hits collection! It was definitely hard to narrow down their best songs to these two. I'm a big fan of "What about your friends?" and "Baby baby baby"
I did hear that Prince wrote Waterfalls, but I don't remember Prince ever writing something so sugary. Even the "Batdance" came off badass.
