more songs

Day 16 - A song that you used to love but now hate
Limp Bizkit - Nookie. Don't even act like you didn't rock out to this in the 90s... driving your mom's honda, in the suburbs, like a badass....

Day 17 - A song that you hear often on the radio
Calvin Harris - Feel so Close. Hearing this everywhere right now. Not my favorite, but not bad. It was on a recent Tiesto podcast and it proved to be a most excellent running song.

diary #7

 Lola. Age 9.

March 1, 1991

Dear Diary,

My mom forced me to eat fish. Boy, she is very mean sometimes.

Even at age 9 I was a budding vegetarian, refusing to eat like a reasonable human. Momma Firmingham is a lovely, not-mean lady. But please note for the record: she has questionable cooking skills.

a bucket list of sorts

- learn to surf
- sail a boat
- waltz
- get a tattoo (maybe)
- learn a language
- grow my hair long enough to french braid it
- run a marathon
- sing karaoke
- visit the louvre
- ride my bike
- make mixes
- make songs
- make poetry
- say yes more often

Day 15 - A song that describes you

Latyrx (Lyrics Born) - Lady Don't Tek No

It may not describe me at this particular point in my life, but it's certainly how I aspire to be...

Day 14 - A song that no one would expect you to love

Dixie Chicks - Cowboy Take Me Away

I know! It's weird, but I love it. Perhaps I'm secretly a country girl.

- old habits that die hard... like amphetamines and sniffing glue.

song challenge: catching up

Day 11 - A song from your favorite band

 Love.

Day 12 - A song from a band you hate

Oh lord, I've involuntarily listened to a lot of Rush. Inevitably, I grew an affinity for 'Tom Sawyer' and here we are. Have you ever sung this at the top of your lungs terribly? Please try it because it's really fun.

Day 13 - A song that is a guilty pleasure

Obviously.

diary #6

Lola. Age 8.

May 28, 1990

Dear Diary,

I'm going to Juliet's house. I bet we're going to have fun because we're going on slipn slide! I have my bathing suit on right now! I can't wait.

I've got three fish. I've got Harry, Curly Locks and Indiana Jones! Do you like their names?

No lie, I remember playing at Juliet's house that day and it really was awesome. Not so awesome was the impending doom facing Curly Locks. He was soon replaced by Stormin' Norman, a namesake suggested by my republican mother.

Day 09 - A song that you can dance to

I love to dance. Clubs, weddings, parties, solo living room dance parties, etc. It's one of my favorite things to do, and it's also one of the rare times when I don't feel self conscious.

I've been in one very awesome dance battle in a club to Daft Punk's 'Around the World.' It was glorious.

Mr. Vegas - Heads High. Dancehall has a special place in my heart. In college, Thursdays were designated for tearing it up at dancehall night with the Reggae Bus Crew in Pittsburgh. Looove <3

Remember when I attempted a song challenge and then abandoned it? Time to finish what I started.

diary #5

Lola. Age 13. Punctuation and grammar intact.

July 25, 1995

Today at the Mall me + Jill were almost beat up. These people were mad at us because my mom almost ran them over with her car. We called Name Redacted to get him to come to the mall because we were freaked out. He didn't come though.

Lola

I am not 100% confident this is an accurate entry, as I have no recollection of this event and 13 year old girls cannot be trusted. It seems plausible though, as I've accompanied Momma Firmingham driving erratically through the Mall parking lot before.

true confessions about lola firmingham

- I love giving directions to/chatting up tourists. It might be the Buffalo in me, but I'm delighted to help out.

- Despite popular opinion, I like wearing a suit to work everyday. Not much stress involved in picking out a top and cute shoes.

-  I reserve a special level of judgement for people who love philly but hate new york because it's "dirty."

-  People always think I'm a stoner upon first meeting. Mainly because I'm so soft-spoken and smiley. It's a misconception that I've encountered through high school, college and even law school. But I don't mind. There are far worse stereotypes to have, like "trollop" or "bathsalt junkie"

diary #4

Lola. Undated entry. Age guesstimate ~8.

What I want to be when I grow up:
1. Cheerleader
2. Gymnastics teacher
3. Singer
4. Work at Geraniums  (retail store)
5. Actor

Hmmm. I guess it's never too late to pursue my dreams?

sunday musings

- Knocked out a grueling 7 mile run this morning. "A seitan burrito is great running fuel" turns out to be a completely unfounded claim. A seitain burrito is best served with a pacifico and a lovely nap. (Also on the list of ill-conceived running fuel: cheap gin, gummy worms)

- Following the Greek elections live via BBC is quite possibly the nerdiest thing I could do today. And I'm doing it. Go to hell, cool lunch table!

- Made a reference to rule #34 today, which provides further evidence that I am a terrible human being. Not going to add a link to it. Nope.

- Just called Poppa Firmingham for Father's Day. He discussed family genealogy at great length and detail.

- Here's my number, so call me maybe. Get out of my heaaaaaad.

- On a personal level, this is a pretty significant and difficult weekend. Relevant quote: "No one saves us but ourselves. No one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path."

- Austra - The Beat and The Pulse (still going remix)

Friday, June 15, 2012

For a long time it seemed to me that life was about to begin- real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life.

Lola. Age 12. Results of a M.A.S.H. game

June 26, 1994

Husband:   GB
Children:  3
Car:  Black BMW
Live:  Buffalo
Job:  Vet
Mr.'s Job:  Doctor Lawyer
Pets:  Bird
Money:  11 Billion

Fascinating. In 1994, I anticipated my Net Worth at 11 Billion. How much is that now? Someone who isn't me should calculate the inflation on that one. I'm also a big fan of the occupation "Doctor Lawyer." GB is probably an asshole.

- Victory summer love. I really do want to drink this every day. I think it directly contributed to the 310 I rolled in skeeball last night. Well, that and a I think I finally "found my 40." (phrase coined by stuart firmingham)

Beastie Boys - The Move by apantahwthen

- Money really is the root of all evil. (Note: there is a fabulous collection of money clipart here.) I guess it can't be that evil. Here's Money rollerblading, and also giving you the courtesy call the next day.

- Oh dear. Now I'm going to have to read this, too.

diary #2

Lola. Age 9.

June 14, 1991

Dear Diary,

What is skinny dipping? Well whatever it is I'm not doing it.

what have i been up to?

- Skeeball

- Attempting to sample all the coffee within walking distance.

- Fixing my life.

- Today's playlist, Count Basie and Jelly Roll Morton.

- End of the fiscal year insanity at work. I just got an excel error:
"You may not use reference operators (such as unions, intersections, and ranges)..." and I read it as
"You may not use reference operators (such as unicorns, intersections, and ranges)..."  This is only funny to the 3% of the population comprised of math nerds.

- Burpees. Dude looks so graceful in this video. I do not share this gracefulness. I hit the ground like a ton of bricks.

diary #1

A few years ago, I located my pre-teen diaries from 1990-1996. They are horrifying, hilarious and terribly embarrassing. Naturally, I've decided to post excerpts so we can all laugh at them.  Note: if someone knows the code for comic sans, let me know. I imagine all pre-teen diaries should be in that font type.

December 24, 1994

Dear Book,
I am at Val's house. Yesterday, I went to the dance. It was fun. I danced with:
Name redacted - 3 times
Name redacted - Once
Name redacted - Once
Name redacted - 2 songs (the freak!)

I think I really like Name redacted #4!

See ya,
Lola

Please note that I made lists and provided general statistical analysis at age 12. About boys. This explains a lot.
